Jules-Alexandre Grün was the pupil of Jean-Baptiste Lavastre, the famed theatrical decorator of the Paris Opera, and of Antoine Guillemet, a renowned landscape painter. He was a joyous member of the school of Montmartre where he decorated a number of cabarets and assisted in decorating the Tavern de Paris. Grün is known for his Belle Epoque paintings, pastels, posters and in particular for his comical illustrations in the French magazines La Caricature, La Fin de siecle, Le Courrier francais, and Le Rire, among others.
