In 1940, as World War II tore through Europe, Salvador and Gala DalÃ crossed into Portugal and eventually sailed on the Excambion from Lisbon to New York in August 1940. Daliâ€™s arrival in New York was one of the catalysts in the development of that city as a world art center in the post-War years. The trauma and the view of war had often served as inspiration for DalÃâ€™s work.
