Description:
Ceramic terra cotta Greek-style vessel with a silk screen running man imagery.
Historical Context:
This is Grand Rapids based artist Michael Pfleghaar’s modern interpretation of an Ancient Greek amphora. While looking at the vessel from the front, it appears Pfleghaar mimicked the exact size and shape of a typical Ancient Greek amphora, from the side, its skinny shape proves this vessel would not have been very useful for storage. The scene on the front and back of men running is reminiscent of other Greek amphoras used as prizes in athletic competitions.
