Description:
Photograph of a child in the middle of drinking from a cup. The photograph only captures half of the child and leaves the rest of the image as a wall.
Historical Context:
"In the village of Mwandi, located in the southwestern corner of Zambia, the HIV/AIDS epidemic is devastating the community. Child orphans and the homeless elderly primarily populate the village. The generation in between, the parents of the young, and the children of the old, has nearly become extinct as a result of AIDS. AIDS in Africa is not simply the look of the dying; it is also those left behind. This series of images is not merely a representation of what is happening in Mwandi, it is a confrontation. Allow yourself to be confronted by these images. Bear witness to that which remains: the orphans and elderly of Mwandi." - Crista Chapman
