Historical Context:
Since the 3rd Century CE, calligraphy has been considered a form of fine art in China. Not only does it require immense skill and fine judgement, but each image is regarded as an extension of the artist or writer. The Chinese painter uses essentially the same materials as the calligrapher, brush, ink, and silk or paper. Their images are often judged on the same criteria as calligraphy, focusing on the vitality and expressiveness of the brushstroke and rhythm of the overall composition.
