Historical Context:
The Mogao, or Dunhuang Caves, of China, include over 500 Buddhist caves dug out of the mountains centuries ago. Today the canves still hold over 50,000 square meters of murals, containing some of the finest examples of Buddhis art spanning over 2,000 years. Early Dunguang murals show influence from India and Central Asia in both painting techniques and content. Many of the murals include images of Buddha, both standing and seated, giving the caves the nickname "Thousand Buddha Caves."
