Historical Context:
From a young age local Michigan artist Mary Gillis had an interest in art. In her early 20’s she traveled to Italy to study art and art history at the Centro Internazionale delle Arti, Palazzo Grassi. Over the years, her professional style has evolved from pastel drawings, collage and prints to large-scale sculptures and mixed media work. Through changing styles, nature, and especially water, have always remained an important influence on her work. She often returns home to the Great Lakes for inspiration.
