Historical Context:

David Shapiro’s paintings and prints feature adjoining square and rectangular fields of color interspersed with varied subtle textile patterns. He chooses rich earthy tones of sepia, umber, ochre, reds, oranges and blues to create an aura of calm and meditative described as a Zen-like visual experience. His themes are on consciousness and our connection to the Universe, evoking the feelings of Eastern meditative practices.

Shapiro attended Skowhegan School of Art in Skowhegan, Maine in 1965. He received his BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and his MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. His work is found in many public and private collections around the world, and he has taught art at Parsons School of Design, Barnard College, and Western Michigan University.
