The Florence Cathedral, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, or the Duomo di Firenze in Italian, is the cathedral of Florence, Italy. Construction began in 1296 on the Gothic style building designed Arnolfo di Cambio. The structure was completed in 1436. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered by white. and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris. The cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence.
