Historical Context:
In this image, artist Dong Yanzi portrays the Mogao Caves, also known as the Cave of the Thousand Buddhas. Located in Dunhuang, China, an oasis located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in the Gansu province of China. The caves hold over 500 temples and some of the oldest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years.
