Historical Context:
Christy DeHoog creates worlds that are filled with buzzing contraptions, softly rendered buildings, and abstracted worldly forms. Her mixed-media paintings speak to open-ended narratives and relationships between organic, breathing machines and their invented environments. From an early age DeHoog was fascinated by the workings of the natural world around her. She writes, "As a child I spent much of my playtime making discoveries in the backyard. The yard led to woods with a nearby swamp that housed many "specimens" to collect and observe under my father's microscope." This view of tiny worlds under and around us influenced DeHoog tremendously. Her work reflects on this discovery and to the child-like exuberance that fueled it.
