Historical Context:
James Houston arrived in Inukjuak, a northern village located on the Hudson Bay in Quebec, Canada in 1948 and lived among the Inuit in the Arctic until 1962. He slept in igloos, hunted walrus, ate raw seal meat and traveled by dog sled team. While living with the Inuit, a stone carving was given to him by an Inuit man, an experience that drove Houston to create Inuit-Inspired art.
