Historical Context:
Jo Hormuth was born in Grand Rapids, raised in Rockford, and is now based out of Chicago. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose ideas come from a fascination with perceptual, cognitive and linguistic contradiction. Hormuth often creates a number of smaller works that fill a site-specific location or gallery. To create her artwork, Hormuth takes time to research the architecture, history and materials in which a work will be developed with and conditions in which it will be displayed. This interest in restoration and preservation, coupled with a lifelong passion for painting, led her to the field of historic preservation. Hormuth is also the founder of Chicago Architectural Arts, a group that restores, designs and fabricates historically significant interiors for period rooms in museum exhibitions.
