Historical Context:
Willem de Kooning was a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist. He was born in Rotterdam and moved to the United States in 1926, becoming a citizen in 1962. In the post-World War II era, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as Abstract Expressionism or "action painting" where the literal brushstrokes of the artist were a main focus of the painting. Other painters that developed this school of painting include Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, Philip Guston and Clyfford Still.
