Historical Context:
Arshile Gorky was a survivor of the Armenian genocide led by the Ottoman government during and immediately following World War I. As a result, his work is rich with dark themes that such trauma and turbulence can incite. He is considered to be an expressionist, though his art preceded the Abstract Expressionist movement by at least 10 years.
