Historical Context:
The H.L. Hunley, while not being the first submarine, was the first of its kind to successfully sink a ship in combat. On February 17, 1864, carrying 70 to 90 pounds of explosives, the H.L. Hunley completed its mission of sinking the Union ship USS Housatonic, creating a victory for the South and became a forerunner for the creation of modern day nuclear submarines. Sadly, in the event of its victory, complications arose and the Hunley met its demise near Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, leaving no survivors and taking with it food, guns, and ammunition for the Northern troops.
