Description:
The image is divided by a large branch with red and orange produce on it. A caterpillar sits on the branch, above the branch there is a large brown butterfly, below the branch there is a large blue butterfly.
Historical Context:
Maria Sibylla Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who studied plants and insects, and made detailed paintings of them. Her detailed observations and documentation made her a significant contributor to entomology. This illustration was reproduced from an original watercolor painting from her book "Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam".
