Maria Sibylla Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who studied plants and insects, and made detailed paintings of them. Her detailed observations and documentation made her a significant contributor to entomology. This illustration was reproduced from an original watercolor painting from her book "Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam".
