Kyoto Calligraphy Lesson
Large vertical piece; white and blue. White Chinese calligraphy cutting through blue strip and dripping paint towards bottom. Black and white shapes both above and below the calligraphy.
Inspired by images from a calligraphy lesson book, artist Nicholas Hill has created an explosion of mark-making using the light sensitive medium of cyanotype. Each image is drawn by pouring light-sensitive liquid onto a piece of paper, then tilting and folding it in order to create gestural, calligraphic marks. The sheet is then exposed to the sun, while Hill uses hand drawn transparencies as negatives to layer one image atop another.
