Paul Ranson was born in Limoges, France and studied art at l'École des Arts Décoratifs, and later at l'Académie Julian in 1886. As a result of his studies at Julian, he became an integral member of the Nabis group of artists, being the initiate of the Nabis' private, exclusive vocabulary (for example, they would call an art studio an "ergasterium"). In 1908 he co-founded l'Académie Ranson with his wife, Marie-France, where they taught the Nabis art style, methods and philosophy.
