John Singleton Copley was an early American painter most famous for his portraiture. He subjects were most often from the middle-class, but also included important figures in colonial New England. Over his lifetime, Copley produced about 350 works of art, making him a quite prolific and influential painter in colonial America. With his startling likenesses of persons and things, he came to define a realist art tradition in America.
