Historical Context:
Claes Jansz Visscher was a Dutch draftsman, print maker and publisher. He is recorded as being an engraver in Amsterdam in 1608, and his early engravings, from 1605 onwards, consist entirely of reproductive prints after the designs of Flemish artists. He became one of the most prominent print publishers of Amsterdam, specializing in portraits, landscapes and maps, the elaborate borders of which were often his own designs.
