Historical Context:
Despite the numerous landscapes and still lifes throughout Alten's career, his livelihood still depended on portrait commissions. He painted this portrait of his daughter, Camelia (1899-1999), and another of her husband, Ralph W. Demmon (1894-1978) soon after the two were married in 1924.
