Historical Context:
Merle Spandorfer was a Philadelphia-area painter, printmaker and author. Throughout her career, Spandorfer conducted research on replacing toxic artists’ materials with less harsh compounds to safeguard the health of artists, especially printmakers. This research culminated in her book, “Making Art Safely.” For her artwork, her images reflected her sunny personality through bright, colorful and joyful images. She found inspiration all around her, from the engineering projects of her husband; the landscape of the Pocono Mountains; and from the plants and seed pods from her own backyard.
