George Wesley Bellows was an American painter born in Columbus, Ohio. He is known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City, often exhibiting highly political and social themes. In later life, however, Bellows focused on more domestic themes, his subjects often being his wife and daughters. Paintings and prints by Bellows are in the collections of many major American art museums, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY and The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, NY. The Columbus Museum of Art in Bellows' hometown also has a sizable collection of both his portraits and New York street scenes.
