Portrait of Cuban woman against spattered background.
Historical Context:
This grouping of photo paintings is directly inspired from photographic images that Jose Narezo created during his sojourns to Cuba. Many of the images are of street life in Havana and depict the people, outdated automobiles, and the neglected buildings that inhabit the capitol city. Upon his return, he enlarged these snapshot images to a scale that allowed viewers to immerse themselves in his scenes. He then manipulated the enlarged reproductions by applying paint to a sheet of Plexiglas that covers the image. By doing this, he hoped to intensify the image and the experience of the viewer by exaggerating color and texture in particular areas.
