Historical Context:
Michael Maitner is a self-taught, Grand Rapids artist. Over the past thirty years, his landscapes have reflected many different artistic styles. These styles include Realism, Impressionism and a style Michael describes as "whimsical," influenced by a group of American artists known as the Regionalists (1930s). The Regionalists sought to revive idealism by updating the American Myth, defined largely in Midwestern terms.
