While an accomplished artist in his own right, Auguste Racinet is best known for publishing two major pictorial works on the history of design, "Le Costume Historique" and "L'Ornement Polychrome." This piece shows on of the 220 plates created as reference works for architects, artists, and decorators in the 19th century that are part of Racinet's "L'Ornement" series.. The goal of these images was to bring motifs from various ancient cultures around the world to the hands of the designers of the time. Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Chinese, Japanese, Persian, and Indian influences were all included. Also highlighted in the publications were Medieval, Renaissance, and 18th century European art all represented by a wide array of mediums including woodwork, metalwork, textiles, architecture, pottery and painting.
