Historical Context:
Sachu Yamashita is a Japanese artist who participated in the Synoptic Lecture Program of William James College, one of the founding colleges of Grand Valley State University. She was commissioned to paint the colorful William James College murals in Lake Superior Hall, drawing inspiration from both simplified elements of nature and simplified images of traditional Japanese painting. The intention of the artist was to make a friendly, happy environment out of the generic, somewhat sterile hallways.
