Historical Context:
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. In addition to numerous scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted many portraits. Velázquez's artwork has served as a model for the realist and impressionist painters, as well as more modern artists, including Picasso and Dalí.
