Description:
A horizontal series of four images. The furthest left image is a dark orange square. The furthest right image depicts a hand holding a fish in the same shade of orange as the square. Green, gray, tan and yellow collage elements surround it - the words "expect anything everything" float around the hand. Between these two images are the image of the fish and the hand in various stages of pixelation, forming an evolution of the image from complete abstraction to representational.
Historical Context:
This work of art was included in a 2021 GVSU Art Gallery exhibition featuring a selection of the artwork from the Fishladder publication, a student-run journal of art and writing edited and produced by undergraduates at GVSU.

"This piece encourages the viewer to consider how preconceived notions may affect our
expectations, and how such presumptions ultimately shape our reality. If we expand our
expectations, or even rid of them altogether, we open ourselves up to possibilities
previously trapped. We, knowingly or unknowingly, often set our own limitations through
predication. Therefore, by expecting more we receive more, and by expecting nothing at
all we allow life to guide us to places unplanned. These unintended journeys can be the
most rewarding as they transcend expectation, teaching us things we didn't know we
needed to learn and taking us to places we didn't think we needed to be. Expect
Anything, Everything cautions the viewer not to limit their expectations, ensuring they
don't also restrict their reality as a result." - Janiah Skye
