Historical Context:
This work of art was created by a patient that participated in Corewell Health's Expressive Arts program.
Art is an important part of the rehabilitation process and participating in art making. Including arts in health care is a growing complimentary alternative modality of care that brings customized holistic healing to patients and their families. The creative process can help reduce pain, anxiety, and isolation while aiding in their physical, mental and emotional recovery. Art also inspires hope and improves health and wellness.
Corewell Health's Expressive Arts programs provides patients a creative space that can help relieve anxiety, increase mindfulness, relaxation, and socialization, while offering people an opportunity to express themselves and their individual health journeys. Beginning in 2008, the Expressive Arts program has now grown to include seven Corewell Health hospitals including the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion and the long-term Neuro Residential Care program. During sessions, individuals participate in art-making activities, learn drawing and painting techniques, develop their creative skills, and socialize with their peers.
