Historical Context:
This sculpture was designed as a memorial to scientists and mathematicians from many different time periods and cultures. It reminds us of the amazing diversity of ideas, inventions and other scientific accomplishments which have been realized because of our common endowment, the human brain. The Scientists is the result of a collaborative effort between myself and many others at Grand Valley State University. The 160 names engraved on the plaques at the base of this sculpture were chosen by science and mathematics faculty in an election process which began with over 600 names. The people chosen represent a cross-section of mathematicians and scientists who the faculty feel have been influential in the development of their own thinking, teaching and research. Candidates for selection included personal mentors, teachers, internationally known scholars and Nobel Laureates.
