Historical Context:
A graduate of Grand Valley's Art and Design Department Amy Pettinger, chronicled her first visit to New York City, in her piece "F Train". Breaking up the work into three panels helps convey the compartmental nature of most subways, while the stage-like setting permits the viewer an easy review of the characters who make up the subject of the painting. Therefore, the artist lends us a cross-section of society from destitute to middle class caught in transit together. The French artist of the mid-19th century, Daumier could be cited as a source for this work with his many realist accounts of urban Paris changing into an industrialized center.
