Historical Context:
Willem Breddels was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, in 1938 and his early years coincided with the Second World War. Willem typically expressed himself in a pictorial language of a rather poetical nature, but based on traditional craftsmanship. His monumental work and portraiture have a light and contemporary tone. Most of his paintings reside in private collections in the Netherlands and elsewhere. In Holland also, art centers, art libraries and museums acquired works by his hand. Today, Willem Breddels lives in the Netherlands and is a working artist in his native town Leiden. He produces not only commissioned work (portraits), but also non-commissioned (still life).
