Historical Context:
Painter Michael Pfleghaar, sees his role as a local Grand Rapids artist is to create something that is out of this world. While he paints landscapes and still lives inspired by Michigan scenery, he wants to bring something new to the ordinary view around us. Focusing on the simplicity of design and experimenting with abstraction, Pfleghaar creates images that are full of bright, exaggerated colors, simplified shapes and twisted perspectives. Less interested in capturing a realistic interpretation, he creates a scene that fully engages its viewers and makes them wonder what it would be like to live in the world as Pfleghaar sees it. “Early on I realized how the things we choose to surround ourselves [with] are a reflection of self.” - Michael Pfleghaar
