Historical Context:
This monumental oil attests to Don Kerr's love of landscapes, particularly those involving reflections of light through ad upon water. Like Monet's great cycle of paintings called the Water Lilies, Au Sable River surrounds and overwhelms the viewer with the ripples and eddies of light as they play across the surface of the water. The time of day and year is very important here, depicting nature as its summer apex and thus contributing to the overall green persuasions of the canvas. Don Kerr served as a professor in Grand Valley State University's Art and Design Department.
