Description:
Fifteen dolls attending a wake. The other three dolls represent two angels and the deceased; Displayed inside their own wood case; the lower front portion of the case is open to reveal flowers and knees of the kneeling.
Historical Context:
Born and raised near Hudsonville, Michigan, artist Esther Luttikhuizen's interest in art emerged while in high school. She attended Hope College, majoring in studio art. Soon after college she moved to New York City and began exhibiting and selling her art. In 1991, Luttikhuizen moved to Seattle, Washington and attended the MFA program at the University of Washington School of Art. She later founded the Esther Claypool Gallery, located in the historic Pioneer Square.
