Description:
Black and white woodcut of forests and plants in a landscape with swirling winds.
Historical Context:
Jim Fitzpatrick is both an artist and a farmer. His close relation to the land is crucial to his work. However, a love of the rich blacks characteristic of woodcut is also important. In Wild Lands the artist has reduced the landscape elements to terse characters which have a strong visual impact. The viewer is broad sided with a tenacious and difficult vista, presenting nature as difficult and the opposite of the Arcadian paradise some artists prefer.
