Historical Context:
Born in Chicago in 1923, Ralph Hammer Scharf lived much of his life in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Scharf was inspired to create art after returning home for an over sees tour for the Army. At the age of 23, Scharf became the youngest artist to ever win an Associated American Artists (AAA) Purchase Prize in 1947.
