Historical Context:
Dewey Blocksma is a Michigan artist who studied medicine at the Northwestern University Medical School. He worked as an emergency room physician for ten years before pursuing art. His work has been described as being, on the surface, witty and whimsical, while on a deeper level, his work evokes the concept of beauty in imperfection. His paintings typically represent moments from his life and, on his work, he states: “I use painting as a way to figure out what I’m trying to say, not as a way to explain what I’m thinking.â€
