Jacob Nelson’s choice to use intaglio printmaking techniques is what allowed him to obtain precision and detail into his images. The design or drawing is cut, scratched, or etched into the printing surface or plate. The plate is often made from copper, zinc, aluminum or even hard plastic. There are six types of intaglio techniques, the first three being; etching, aquatint, and photogravure. These techniques use nitric acid to corrode the metal plate which will allow the plate to hold ink and be printed using a printing press. Engraving, drypoint and mezzotint techniques use a sharp tool to scratch images into the surface of the plate. Nelson’s intaglio images are created primarily through the process of etching and aquatints.
