Historical Context:
The Bengal tiger is associated with the Hindu deities Shiva (supreme god) and Durga (supreme goddess). In Pokhara, Nepal, there is a festival in recognition of the tiger, known as “Bagh Jatra”. Celebrants dance disguised as tigers and are "hunted". The Warali tribe of Maharashtra, India, worship “Waghia”, the lord of tigers, who is in the form of a shapeless stone. Similar tiger-gods are also found in Hanoi and Manchuria.
