Historical Context:
While minimalist in form, Clay Ketter's work reflects his background as a carpenter and invokes traditional carpentry and house construction methods. In his series Trace Paintings, Ketter creates paintings that resemble wall surfaces being redecorated. Traces of wallpaper, shelves, old layers of paint and electric wiring evoke a sense of uncertainty as to whether this is a real wall or a painting of a wall. This painting bears the loss and void of a wall where cabinets and counters once were, only their shapes and shadows left behind.
