Historical Context:
In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of Earth and the ancestral mother of all life, said to have been born at the dawn of creation. The heavenly gods were descended from her through her union with Uranus, the god of the sky. Gaia, our individual journey through the natural world, are subjects of several works by Charlotte Harrison. On her work, Harrison comments, "Gaia signifies the inner nature of us all as individuals and the need to emerge in wonder and discover all that life has to offer including the world we create for ourselves. In this piece, Gaia is stepping out into her new creation and finding her voice in a world that may prove to be complicated, yet shared by us all."
