Historical Context:
A head tie is a women’s cloth head scarf that is commonly worn in many parts of West and Southern Africa. The head tie is used as an ornamental head covering of fashion accessory, or for functionality in different settings. In the west African language of Yoruba, a head scarf is called a gel. Geles can be worn for everyday activities, with more elaborate ceremonial ones worn to weddings, special events and church activities.
