Historical Context:
"I remember the day we heard about Notre Dame burning, and I remember scrolling through a CNN article about the fire and damage and I couldn’t help but notice the language in the article. There were these really beautiful words and you could just feel the sorrow from the people, from the reporter. I was really into found poetry at the time and I thought this would make for some rich material to draw from. By using watercolor to illustrate the flames and smoke, I was able to utilize a normally delicate medium to depict something destructive and I love the oxymoron in that. By combining the words and illustration into a hybrid, I feel like it made it an even more unique piece, telling the story of this cultural tragedy almost as if it were from the building’s perspective." - Katharine Gardella
