Historical Context:
Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Michael Alderson became a master of oil pastel as a medium while at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. Inspired by the quote by William Hazlitt, “whatever holds itself at a distance from us is also welcoming,” Alderson creates an inviting sense of space simply by using both hot and cold colors. In playing with different temperatures of color, Alderson creates an intriguing depth within his images. He adds to this depth by building up areas of pigments from his pastels, creating areas rich in texture.
