Historical Context:
GVSU's study abroad program in Haiti was designed to allow students to experience Haitian culture and gain an understanding of daily life in rural Haiti through service learning. In 2017 and 2018, GVSU students and faculty had the good fortune of meeting tour guide Romel Jean-Pierre. Romel grew up in poverty and lost his mother in the devastating 2010 earthquake, but despite all the challenges he faced in his past, he managed to learn four languages, travel widely and aspires to be President of Haiti someday.
"The most inspiring person I met while in Haiti was Romel. When I first met him, I
just saw him as a guy who earned a middle-class living as a tour guide. My perspective changed when he showed us Atis Rezistans and pointed out the tin shack that he lived in for four years of his childhood." -Megan DeKeyser (2018 GVSU Study Abroad Haiti participant)
