Historical Context:
Born Cyril Kenneth Bird, he adapted his pen name of "Fougasse" when he started working as the art editor of the magazine Punch when World War II broke out in 1939. He then offered his artistic services free to the British government as he produced propaganda material. He was well known for his gossiping cartoon characters, a welcome change to otherwise serious mass communication of the time.
