Sir John Clerk
Medium:Heelball and Paper
Date:1970 – 1980
Heelball and Paper; Black wax and blue paper. Man kneeing in front of open book. Three swans on sash across his chest.
Wax rubbing of the funerary brass of Sir John Clerk (d. 1539). The original brass is located at St. Mary Church in Oxfordshire, England. This is an interesting piece because he being depicted as kneeling in prayer rather than standing facing the viewer. The three swans that decorate his clothing are heraldic symbols (part of his family coat of arms).
